Brigitte Bardot supports GAIA in the fight against the sale of kangaroo meat

"Crossroads, are not you ashamed to support a real massacre?

Brussels, November 26, 2019 - In an open letter to Carrefour Belgium, Carrefour France and Auchan, Brigitte Bardot condemns the sale of kangaroo meat in their stores.
The old movie icon joins the GAIA Save the Kangaroos campaign.

"You are not tired of exposing in your stalls boxes of corpses, pieces of animal flesh filled with suffering whose long painful agony should make you vomit? "

wrote Bardot. Our country plays a key role in this story: Belgium is the world's largest importer of kangaroo meat.

Earlier this year, GAIA launched a new campaign to end the trade and sale of kangaroo meat in our country.
Every year, about 1.6 million Australian kangaroos are hunted and killed in an extremely cruel way.
This makes the kangaroo the most hunted wild animal species in the world.
In 2016, Belgium imported more than 632 tons of kangaroo meat, which equates to about 180,000 (!) Kangaroos.
This makes Belgium the world's largest importer of kangaroo meat.
Brigitte Bardot supports GAIA in its campaign and asks, among others, Carrefour Belgium to stop selling this cruel meat.

"So STOP these inhuman monstrosities, these massive destructions for power, money. Give the good and good example, the others will follow you, "she wrote.

Dangerous meat
In his letter, B.B. not only refers to the enormous suffering of animals, but also to questionable hygiene measures and potential public health hazards - something that GAIA also highlighted earlier this year.
Kangaroos are killed and cut in nature without any health supervision.
Carcasses are transported at room temperature in open vehicles and exposed to dust and insects.
But the industry has found a solution: regularly clean kangaroo meat with acetic acid and lactic acid to remove traces of pathogenic bacteria.

"All this to feed the European market of unhealthy meat, cleaned with lactic acid to hide the E. Coli and Salmonella bacteria, as was verified by my Foundation (Brigitte Bardot Foundation Foundation) through laboratory tests on pieces sold in supermarkets ", writes Brigitte Bardot.

Michel Vandenbosch, President of GAIA:

"Aldi, Colruyt, Delhaize and Lidl set a good example.
Like Brigitte Bardot, we rely on Carrefour's good faith and ethical commitment to make the right decision and remove the kangaroo meat from the shelves. "

Like Carrefour Belgium, other brands such as Cora and Match continue to sell kangaroo meat for the end of year festivities.
GAIA also asks them to remove these products from their offer.
